Hi, I recently had surgery for haglund’s deformity 6 weeks ago. I spent 3 weeks in a cast and after the first week I was able to walk in the cast. Now i’m nearly 100%, but unfortunately tomorrow I will be going for surgery on my other heel. I was told by my podiatrist that the older, more conservative treatment of haglund’s deformity was to completely remove the achilles tendon. This would cause the patient to be in a cast for 6-8 weeks. He also told me that this would not be a smart idea because whenever a tendon is completely removed, it must be sutured back on and it is possible for the patient to never be the same. The new procedure that my podiatrist performed on me required no movement of the achilles tendon, only careful work done around it. In the end, my heel looks great and I’m walking like my old self again, so I recommend that you find another podiatrist who performs this newer procedure. I promise you will be glad you did. Hope all goes well.
