heel pain

I am a chef and I stand on my feet for extented periods of time without rest. My left heel has been very sore for a week, intense soreness in the morning. This soreness threatens my lively hood. What can I do?

You are not alone in your profession. Long hours on hard floors do take a toll on feet. My first recommendation is that you see a podiatrist for an evaluation and treatment recommendations. Heel pain can have many causes, but the most common is heel spur or plantar fasciitis. For a start I would recommend a sturdy work shoe like Redwing or even a clog, like many chefs wear.
If you go with a work shoe, purchase an addition over the counter prefabricated arch support or orthotic. There are too many brands to name. Some popular ones are made by Spenco, SOF, Sorbothane. Most of Dr. Scholl’s products are generally not going to last. You do get what you pay for.
You can roll your foot on a frozen water bottle for 10 minutes at a time 3 times a day. This targets the inflamed plantar fascia and massages it at the same time. Do not expect a fast cure. The foot is the only part of the body that gets injured and we still expect to use it while it gets well. Good luck.
