how can I test if my hip is out?

(2 discussions)

Hello, I recently had some chiropractic work done(my hip and other stuff were out of alignment).
I sat in to my bed today and am worried that my hip might have shifted…Is there a way to test this at home by someone pushing on my legs? or any other home test? Any info is appreciated. Thanks!!

Well, Mike. You ask an interesting question particularly because the public at large calls a place a hip that is really made of 4 bones. Your 'hip' in the layperson definition is the area below your waist to where you femur or thigh bone starts. In medical terms the only place that would be considered the hip is the joint between the femur and the acetabulum, which is in itself made up of 3 other bones. The 3 other bones are the pubis, ischium, and illia. The pubis is the pubic bone and lies at the most front part of the 'pubic region'. It is easy to feel and most people will know what it is. The ischium is what you sit on when you sit down, if you sit on your hands with the palms up you are sitting on an area of the ischium called the ischial tuberosity. The illia is the rounded flat bone that you can feel as the hard point below your last ribs. The illia makes up part of the SI joint, with the sacrum being the other. The two main areas within this general region that can subluxate are the 'hip joint', between the femur and acetabulum, and the SI joint between the sacrum and illia. The SI joint is easy to feel it is the area below the small of your back that is dented in. If you start at the gluteal cleft, sensored crack, and travel up and out at a 45° angle you will find the upper portion of the SI joint. If this is tender to the touch or is warmer than the surrounding area then likely there is inflamation in the joint and care should be sought. The hip joint is actually beyond my ability to describe testing for. I can do it but it takes 2 people and is pretty hard to describe. My advice is if you think something is wrong or it is time for a check up appointment go and see your DC. They may find something that you hadn't notice and correct it before it gets painful.

There are many things that can make the hip joint malfunction. First, in your case, have the doctor order an MRI to rule out pathology.
