How long does it take for nerves to heal?

(10 discussions)

I have nerve damage in my foot, and I injured it in april, I still can’t bend my big toe and it is numb. This is also preventing me from wearing normal shoes. I can only wear slippers or moccasins, or these adjustable sandles. Does anyone know how long it takes for nerves to heal?

hi I’m 18 yrs old. I got shot in the testicles and in my upper left thigh and my left butcheek. they did a testicular repair. meaning they healed my testicle and sewed it back up. there is a bullet still in my back above the sensoredox on the right hand side. I went to the doctor that repaired me testicle and told him that I’m having erection problems and he asked me do I have normal orgams. I sed yes because I do. he then said that then the testicle that was injured and repaird is not wats causing the erection problems because the testicles have nothing to do with the sensored getting hard and etc etc.. I no 4 sure thats its definetly not a psycological issue here. when I have sensored wiit my girl I get hard but I feel it getting soft a lil bit as I’m having intercourse wit her. its hard 4 me to get hard,,and when I finally do its hard to sustain 1. when I’m bout to have an orgasm its hard but not as hard as it use to be b4 I got shot. and after the orgasm it gets soft immedialty. I still feel numb in some areas of my thighs and sensoredox. I’m gona tell the doctor all of this stuff.. I jus would like to no ur diagnosis to this problem, and can it be fixed?,,i memba something bout my a lamina to some bone in my sensoredox I think it was my tale bone or suntin that got cracked.

In 1980 I ruptured a disc in my lower lumber, which left me with foot drop on my right side. The surgeon who removed the disc, repaired the nerve. I was told that it would regenerate, but very slowly. Today I can feel a small amount function, but due to muscle atrophy I still cannot lift my foot. Do you think if I can rebuild the muscles, that I’ll be able to move my foot? Thank-You Mrk Maiolie Please Rospond

So if I had a severe laceration on my forehead a few years ago, I’m just going to be left with what it is now. During the winter I have severe numbness on the leftside of my forehead all the way back into my hairline. And if I get sunburned It causes very severe pain, it’s weird.

A millimeter/day?!? Do you have any good reference for that?Isn’t that close to the thickness of a dime? Why wouldn’t a severed nerve heal overnight at a regeneration/heal rate of a millimeter/day? I have to say, that answer does not make sense.

A very dear friend had some neural nerves in her lower neck/ spine severed and bruised during an op when they removed several neurofibromas – how long will it take for her to walk again as she can move her limbs but has no sensation?

check webmd for nerve regeneration. I am not a doctor, but have some nerve damage myself due to an operation on my achilles tendon. It appears that you need to know whether the nerve is peripheral or central. Hopefully it is peripheral because CNS does not regenerate and damages are usually permanent. Otherwise it appears you need to know how severe the damage is. Was the nerve severed, bruised, partially damaged, etc. Good Luck.

Nerves regenerate, or heal, at a rate 1 millimeter/day. The only nerves that can regenerate are the nerves outside of the spinal cord, or peripheral nerves. The nerves in the spinal cord, once damaged, cannot regenerate. However, if the peripheral nerve is severely damaged or stretched it may never heal. I say give yourself 1 full year. After one year if it’s still numb, that’s pretty much what you will be left with. Also, can you bend your big toe with your hands? If not, ask your doc if you can have a little physical therapy to give you some stretching exercises if you are allowed to do them. Hope this helps.M. Scott PT CKTP

I cut my left palm near the thumb on 08/16/09 & can only feel the outside of my thumb (the rest is numb & has been numb since the day of the accident. I went to see a hand specialist who did not see any MRI’s of my hand but just made the “quick” decision that I needed surgery to “try” & restore the damaged nerves (something like that). I have an MRI appt 10/27/09 (YIKES) & the surgeon won’t wait. I want to seek a 2nd opinion but was told by friends that if I wait too long for surgery, I could risk not being able to use my left thumb again. Can you help me by giving me an idea on what I should do?
