hurt rib

(3 discussions)

3 weeks ago I hurt my ribs on a ride at the fair.
My niece and nephew got slung into me and it was constant pain the whole ride.
I haven’t been able to work out and have missed some work.
It hurts when I cough, laugh, or breathe deep.
I am wondering how to know if it is bruised or cracked and how long does healing take. (when can I work out, even crunches hurt)

i was playing football when I was pushed over and had a slight pain in my rib. Although I carried on playing as it didn’t seem to bad. a day later it is hurtin about the same amount and I am not in a lot of pain although there is slight pain when I cough or laugh. I was wondering whether it was a serious rib injury? can I do low impact physical activity such as the treadmill or the bike at the gym?

I fell on icy cement steps about a month ago and hurt my left-side rib cage. Since there isn’t much of anything they can do for broken or cracked ribs, I decided to just tough it out. After several weeks and still no releif, I decided to go to Urgent Care at the VA Hospital where they took x-rays and found that a nodule had developed from the injury and am now being scheduled for a CT Scan. As I began doing online research about “Nodules”, I found out that this can be life threatening! Don’t delay in having your injuries checked out. Below is some of the info that I gathered:
    ————————————————-
Case Report. A 35-year-old African American man came to the emergency department. On physical examination, a tender nodule over the right seventh rib was found that the patient attributed to a soccer injury.Radiographs of the chest revealed a 4 cm mass in the right upper lobe of the lung involving the seventh rib. A biopsy established the diagnosis of adeno-carcinoma. No distant metastases were found at that time.Although chemotherapy with paclitaxel (Taxol) and carboplatin induced transient improvement in hemolysis, the patient had a massive pulmonary embolism a month after his initial visit, at which time the platelet count had risen to 250,000/L.Subsequent attempts to control the malignancy were unsuccessful, and the patient died 4 months after the initial hospital admission. In reviewing the literature, we found 46 cases of MAHA (microangiopathic hemolytic anemia) associated with malignancy since the original report in 1962. Only 6 of these cases were in patients with lung adenocarcinoma. Therefore, our case represents a rare occurrence. Our patient was also unusual because of his relatively young age and because MAHA had developed by the time of initial presentation. More typically, MAHA is seen later in the clinical course. On the other hand, our patient’s disease was rapidly progressive and in fact was already advanced at the time of his first visit.
