itchy arches
dear dr: both my husband (41) and my youngest son (6) have a constantly itchy arch.
there is no indication of rash, bites, or irritation, but it is a consistent problem.
any suggestions or explanations?
my husband has had it looked at (by a gp, I believe), and was prescribed a cream, which gave minimal relief.
thanks for any response.

Itching is not very well understood and the causes can be varied. There are some topical things one may try but failing that I think you might see a neurologist. There are topical numbing agents such as Lidocaine, Benzocaine, Pramoxine (used in some hemorrhoid creams)alos try a topical anti-inflammatory medication such as Biofreeze, Icy-Hot Sports cream. Then there are the topical capsaicin compounds, such as Zostrix (which is also used for Diabetic neuropathy and pain after Shingles resolves)You can certainly try some of these and if they don't work then see a neurologist. Good luck
