Knee

I went hiking the other weekend in the desert sand and found that my right knee now makes a popping sound just under the kneecap whenever I walk up steps. Can you tell me what and why this is happening?

Dear David, It sound to me like a case of Chondromalacia Patella. This is an abnormal tracking of the patella as it moves up and down in the quadriceps tendon. Try strengthening your vastus medialis muscle by doing leg extensions and holding the last five degrees of extension for ten seconds each rep. Now, there is a chance you tore the menisicus in your knee. This would result in clicking in the joint, as well as, pain and inability to fully extend the knee, and or inability to bear weight. If any of these symptoms are present, consult a doctor immediately. Make sure to get an MRI to help determine the true cause. Thanks for the question.
