knot and soreness on top side of right foot(near ankle)

I have a knot that seems to have come out of nowhere! It hurts all of the time, it was only hurting at night. It is tender to the touch.
It is very hard like bone and causes the whole top of my foot to feel like something is in the way of letting the other bones lay right. I have not hurt it or dropped anything on it. What happened???
