L5-S1 disc protrusion

(17 discussions)

MRI done 4-6-05 findings- (1) Mild degenerative disc disease at L1-L2 (2) L3-L4 and L4-L5 minor anular bulge and disc desiccation. (3) L5-S1 disc desiccation. Posterior central disc protrusion. This abuts the midial margin of the right S1 nervve root, without displacement. What does all of this mean. I know it means my back hurts, but can you explain findings- Thank you, Sharon

The disc degeneration and dessication (drying up of disc) can be the cause of your pain. The most significant finding is the central disc protusion. It abuts the S1 nerve root, which could cause radiating pain into the leg or pelvis, but the good news is that it does not “displace” the nerve. If it did, then it inevitably would cause more radiating pain. However, studies show that around the nerve is a fatty tissue, and if a disc pushes into the fat, it may still irritate the nerve. Certain movements that stress the low back may lead to more pain into the legs. Regardless, your back is degenerating and the best treatment is exercise and movement! A chiropractor can help with increased movement of the low back. The chiro can also teach you exercises and stretches. A massage therapist would help with muscle tightness and soreness. Also, ask the chiro about lifting and avoidance of certain activities that have increased the degeneration over the years. Every patient is different, so find out what likely contributed to your condition.

MY MRI SHOWS T11-12 THERE IS A MINOR DISK BULGE AT THE L4-5 I HAVE DISK DEGENERATIVE DESICATION A SHALLOW LEFT POSTEROLAERAL DISC PROTUSION. NO EVIDENCE OF STENOSIS OF THE SPINAL CANAL OR FORAMINA. AT THE L5-S1 I HAVE DISK DEGENERATIVE DISK DESICCATION. THERE IS A POSTERIOR TEAR. A SHALLOW CENTRAL DISC BULGE OR SHALLOW DISK PROTUSION DOES NOT COMPRESS THE THECAL SAC OR TRAVERSING NERVE ROOTS, THERE IS MILD HYPERTROPHIC FACET CHANGES. PLEASE TELL WHAT DOES THIS MEAN. I HAVE HAD ALOT OF BUTTOX PAIN THAT SOMETIMES STOPS AT THE THIGH, AND SOMETIMES I CAN FEEL IT ALL THE WAY DOWN MY LEG, MY RIGHT FOOT ON TOP GOES NUMB. IT ALSO HAPPENS IN MY LEFT LEG. WHY BOTH. ITS VERY HARD TO SIT DOWN IT HURTS MORE WHEN I SIT, AND THE NUMBNESS ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN I’M IN BED. WHY?

My Ct scan shows a slight potrusion between L5 and S1. Is thsis the same thing as a herniated disc? My doctor tells me that the CT scan shows that that this potrusion to the left is not pinching on a nerve. Can this be seen on a CT scan. I have tingling in both toes and both hands. I am wondering what is going on. It has been 11 months since I was hit by a bus and still I have the same sometimes worse symtoms. I am told it is whiplash. Can whiplash last this long ?? !! Thanks for your reply. :o)

I had an X-rays done on 3/8/07 and an MRI done on 3/13/07. The X-ray showed that I am in normal range. The MRI showed that I have a Mild Facet Arthropathy at L4-L5 and L5 S1. What does this mean? I have severe pain in my lower back which can be so bad that I wake up in the middle of the night and at times I can’t stand straight for a minute or so until I move slowly around. What should I do?

Here is the report of my MRIA posterior central disc protrusion at L5/S1 level without causing a specific nerve root impingement. There is some compromise of the dural sac space. There is a further generalized disc bulge at L4/5 level without involving a nerve root sheeth. Conus medullaris appears normal. To whom should I consult. Orthopeadic surgeon, Neurophysician or Neurosurgeon

Hi, I need some information regarding if attempting to lift something from the floor (approximatley 120 pounds with assistance from another employee)on a Friday can cause an ‘abuts thecal sac at region of origin of left L5 nerve root sheath’ 3 days later? I had no pain 2 days prior, but on the Monday the pain came on suddenly and I had to go to emergency.

I have been diagnosed with an L5-S1 disc fissure/protrusion with right radicular symptoms approximately and S1 nerve root distribution; ICD-9 codes are 722.2 and 724.4. What does this mean?

I have L5-S1 disc protrusion, I have lower back pain. It’s hard for me to bend and if I stay too long sitting it’s hard for me to get up. It’s also hard for me to get up from bed especially in the morning and I experience numbness in my hands especially the right hand. I haven’t been to speciallist yet. I don’t like any kind of surgery. Can this be cured by physiotheraphy alone? Thanks alot for the information.
