Lisfranc injury?

(2 discussions)

My 8yr old was hit hard while running by our dog.
Her left foot rolled at the ankle and she landed on her back with it twisted under her.
She could not bear any weight at all for 4 days.
The first orthopedist told her it was just a sprain and just to walk it off.
The pediatric orthopedist saw 3 fractures in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals and put a cast on her.
Looking online at her symptoms (won’t bear weight, pain in the mid foot, bruising midfoot and on bottom of foot) it seems to me maybe we should rule out a lisfranc fracture by having a weight bearing xray.
The ortho said the reg. xray was enough and that kids do not get that injury.
I have seen some xrays online that looked aligned at first but not weight bearing.
It is now 7 days since she did it, 1 day since we had the cast put on.
With the cast and boot on she will walk on it but only on the heel and side of her foot.
Is that normal for now?
Do children get lisfranc injuries?
Should I pursue this or not?
Thank you.

While it is possible to get a Lisfranc’s dislocation/fracture at any age, I think a pediatric orthopedist would be a very good resource. I can not comment specifically about this situation . As much help that the Internet provides, I find that sometimes people can get misinformation and confusion. You should really discuss your concerns with the doctor. Ask about her using crutches to help off load some pressure.

Thanks for your reply. She seems to be bearing weight much better over the weekend so I think our concerns are probably unfounded. Thanks for your insight.
