losing a toenail

I had a mishap about a month ago where I walked into a watermelon sitting on the floor.
I hit it with such force that some of the rind went underneath the toenail on my big toe, causing that nail to separate from the skin underneath.
I was able to remove the rind and the skin under the nail seems to have healed, but the nail is not attached anywhere but at the base.
There is no infection, but the cuticle is starting to turn yellowish and I can see underneath the nail down to the bottom.
I’ve heard that when you lose a toenail the new one might grow in badly.
How long will it take for this old nail to fall off, and do I need to see a podiatrist to make sure the new one grows in correctly?
