Lower leg distal tibia/fibula fracture

(2 discussions)

I fractured my fibula on 12/4/04. I have been in a cast. They said that my leg stabilized enough after the first 10 days to avoid surgery. I am non-weight-bearing for the full 6 weeks that I have the cast. my cast is coming off on Jan 18,2015. The OS told me that I would then have an air cast for an additional 6 weeks. He said once I have the air cast I will be able to walk but is it really hard to go from nonweight bearing for 6 weeks to walking? Realistically how long will I still need my crutches with the air cast?

Angela I had read on some boards with respect to my specific surgery that some people went from NWB to full weight bearing in a few days and others took a few weeks. So, I bet it will vary for you too. I do know that after being in a cast for 7 weeks it was painful to walk in the aircast and I had been weightbearing in the fiberglass cast for 2.5 weeks. So, I would imagine it may take you awhile. You may want to ask this question on http://www.mybrokenleg.comSOmeone there will probably have an answer more specific to your particular problem.

My husband was in a motorcycle accident back in june. He had a compound fracture of his tibia by his ankle. The bone did not heal very well so he went back to surgery – his doctor told him to start walking, very little, baby steps. He was doing pretty well until he fell and sprained his foot. Now he says it hurts to even put pressure on it. His doctor said that he needs to be putting pressure on it even if it is sprained. Shouldn’t he be in physical theropy??
