lump and pain on top of foot

I have a hard lump or knot on the top of my left foot. It’s located in the middle of my foot and a little to the right. I am unable to wear shoes such as lace up tennis shoes because the pressure on the lump shoots a numbing pain down my foot. I have noticed that wearing flip flops which I often do aggravates it. What is it and what causes it?
