Mckenzie extension

(2 discussions)

I have been to pt with a disk bulge and my pt has me doing McKenzie extension exercisis.
This makes my pain increase, but he continues to tell me to perform this.
What is the idea behind these exercises and how will they help my back.

    ~~~~~~well if they are making your pain worse then they might have possibly made a mistake on those exercises if you have a posterior bulging disc(if the disc jelly pushes backwards) then the extention exs will just make it worse. what does forward bending(reaching for you your toes do) how does that feel for you?
    If the extensions centralize your pain-pain closer to the spine, instead of towards the legs–it is the right exercise, even with a posterior bulge. There are different degrees of extension exercise, and you might need to reduce a full press-up to prone-on-elbows, or prone lying. Flexion will perpetuate the problem. You might also need to add a lateral shift to you extensions.
