Mid Shaft Fracture/5th Metatarsal..Experiences?
Hey, About 3 weeks ago I suffered a mid shaft fracture to my 5th metatarsal. The break doesn’t go all the way through, but it is pretty wide and V-shaped. So I’ve been using a cast boot to walk in. Anyways, Yesterday I went to the doc and he told me to start walking around on it normally, removing the boot. Well I tried doing that but it is pretty painful when I try to “push off” (go through the normal walking motion) I realize that in general the doc knows what he’s talking about but I’m nervous that if I walk on it I will rebreak the bone or it won’t heal right…
I am thinking about walking on it a little each day but even that has me nervous…Any suggestions/advice/experience?
Thanks, reg

First I would want to see the xrays before I can give any suggestions. If you are only 3 weeks post fracture, I would generally not feel comfortable recommending you go without the cast boot. At a minimum, I would immobilize for 6 weeks.
