Nail Removal

I was thinking of having my infected toe nails removed due to a nail fungus that won’t go away. I have tried almost everything for it but it does not get any better. I asked my regular doctor about nail removal. She told me that it would most likely get infected and I would need to have my toes amputated. She said that since it was just cosmetic I since none of the medications I have tried have worked, I should just live with it and not risk having my toes amputated.
What do you think?

I think it is very unfortunate and inappropriate for your doctor to say that. I do ingrown nail surgery several times a day. It is probably the most common surgery done by podiatrists today. I would say that this surgery has save countless people from having to have amputations due to the infection getting to the bone.As far as the surgery being cosmetic, I disagree since you have an infection. Most insurances will cover this procedure. It is true, even though we have terrific medicines today that are used for fungal infections of nails, they are not guaranteed life long cures. I usually will send a clipping of the nail to the lab for analysis. Some people have a damaged nail that is not fungused. Medicine would not work then. I highly recommend you see a podiatrist for further evaluation
