numb big toe

(11 discussions)

I am a waitress, and have a real problem finding proper shoes to accomodate my size 9.5 feet.
My biggest problem is at the end of the night, my big toes are really sore, and my right big toe has a spot on the outside edge that is always numb.
My birkenstock sandals always feel great on my feet, but I am reluctant to spend 150-200 dollars on shoes if I am still going to have the same problem.
I think that it is the ridge in them that give my big toes something to grip that is good – what is your take?

Same thing happened to me within a month of wesring my new birks for plantar fasciitis. It’s been months, so now I’m switching to my sneakers all day to see if it goes away

I too have numbness in my big toes after wearing my Birk for a longer period of time. Praying that the feeling comes back 🙏🏽🙏🏽.

Three years in and big toes still completely numb. Sometimes very uncomfortable especially when cold. Numbness often spreads to adjoining toes . Never wear Birkenstock’s toe post shoes.

I bought new toe post Birks last year and within a few months had 2 numb big toes I stopped wearing them even though they feel fantastic when on. My big toes are still completely numb.

I got new Birkenstocks a couple of months ago and have worn them every day, and now I have numb big toes, so I assume it is the metatarsal ridge in the sandals that is impinging on the nerve. I heard it may take up to a year for the feeling to return, if it does at all. Try not wearing Birks.

Recently I noticed that my left foot big toe had gone partially numb (only the far right hand side of the toe). The circulation seemed fine and there wasn’t any apparent reason why such a condition should occur, except perhaps, stress related. The condition may have occured gradually but I only noticed it later in the day. What caught my eye with your missive, out of the hundreds of others, was the mention of Birkenstocks. Every summer I wear birkenstock sandals which are great. Comfortable, cool, well made etc. but I have a suspicion that the ridge feature that you referred to is slowly causing the toe’s nerves to go numb. I must emphasise that this is only theory and I may be jumping the gun. I’ve stopped wearing my various Birkenstocks to see what happens. I’ll keep you posted if you want.

What happened Charlie? Did the numbness go away without the Birks?

I have been having the same issue. I purchased two new pairs and my right big toe has been numb. I feel like the ridge has been placed farther up I the toe box area. I am done with B if that is the case.

I just returned from a kayaking trip where my feet were subjected to cold, wet, conditions as well as long hours sitting uncomfortably in a kayak. For a few days now my right big toe on the outside edge near the front is completely numb but still seems to have full circulation. No idea why, thought it might have been from an extended period of being cold or poor circulation.

My left big toe has been numbed at the sole and side for two months. There is a discoloration on the right side of the toe nail towards the top edge. Do you know what is the cause of the numbness?

I too suspect the ridge on the sole is numbing my big toe. Will switch to other shoes to see if it helps.
