i have been having numbness and tingling in the tips of my pinky finger and ring finger on my left hand. is this common to a pinched nerve or is it more serious? it has been happening for about 3 months now. can it be carpal tunnel? I rarely use my left hand for my work.

Every morning I wake up with my left pinkie and left ring finger numb. The pinkie finger is more numb than the left ring finger. This does not go away during the day. It’s just always numb. There is no numbness in the hand.

I am a 58 year old white female, 5’4″, 108 pounds, with no history of serious heart condition. There is maternal and paternal heart disease, though. I have had mitral valve prolapse with regurgitation all my life and have always experienced SOME shortness of breath upon exertion, but no real difficulties. I have never been told that I should expect to need surgery for the condition. I take a low-dose aspirin every day, along with Shaklee multi-vitamins and some herbs. I eat a healthy low-fat diet of no pork and lots of chicken and fish and limited dairy. I am not diabetic. I have controlled hypothyroidism, with blood tests having been done two months ago showing normal ranges. I have not had any injuries or unusual activity lately. I woke up yesterday with painful tenderness and strong tingling in the very tips of the fingers of my left hand, in the tissues just over the tip ends of the finger bones – not extending as far up the fingers as the first joint. They aren’t numb. The painful burning type tingling feels almost as if the tips of every finger has been mashed. The tissues are very sensitive to pressure. The thumb, too, is sensitive, but not as bad as the four fingers. The fingertips are normal pink color and look just like the right hand. I do not have carpel tunnel syndrome, to my knowledge. I have tried massaging my fingers, hand, wrist, arm and under arm to release possible blood-flow blockage, but that didn’t alleviate the pain. I have twisted and bent my neck and back, to release a possible pinched nerve, but have no neck or back or stiffness or pain, and those movements didn’t help. I have taken some extra aspirin and shaken my arm and hand, in an attempt to increase blood flow, with no results. I have soaked in a tub of hot water to expand blood vessles, but that didn’t help. I don’t have any more ideas. There is not relativity to the pain and exposure to cold, such as reaching into the refrigerator. The weather here has been very warm. This is everything that I can think of that might be relative to the condition to aid in you in making a suggestion. What is the most likely cause of such a condition? Thank you. Barbara Patrick

I have been experiencing a numbness in all my left hand fingertips for five days constantly now. Should I get worried, or could this be due to a pinched nerve?

Since removing my rings and a watch on my left hand, I don’t suffer anymore from numbness in my left hand. It could be a simple matter of blood circulation. This may be of some use for a lot of your readers who suffer from the same problem.
