Knee Pain

I am 34 and have always had great legs/knees for running and other forms of cardio. Just before Easter I went onto an elliptical machine for an hour. When I got off my knee felt a little strange. Over the next week it worsened. Now it is 1.5 months later and sometimes it hurts climbing stairs or standing for long periods of time. It is a nagging and burning pain (right knee a little towards the outside.. it doesn’t radiate to my thigh or anything). Its not debilitating, but it is very annoying. Basically I want to rule out what it isnt – my question is.. if I had an ACL/torn ligament, etc.. would it be a lot more painful than it is? Usually rest and ice with ibuprofen helps, but it always comes back if I am on my feet for any length of time.
thanks,
scott

Pain at top of leg/side of hips from running?

Hi folks
I’ve posted this same message in reply to the “hip flexor/groin” message string too but thought I’d start a new one as well.

I started running about a year ago and then did nothing over winter. Picked up again a few monhts ago and my groin muscles (right at the top of them where leg meets torso) were alway the thing that hurt at the end of the run. Then that subsided and i started getting pain on the ouside of my hips while running. That’s been bothering me for a few weeks now but thought it would be fine, so ran a 10k race at the weekend and had a really bad time as both of these areas got really sore.

Today (run was yesterday) they are both SO sore and having to lift legs out of car etc to ease pain.

I’m actually going for a sports massage tonight i think with the friend who does them but if he can’t help do you think it’s best to go to a GP first and get referred to a physiotherapist or just go to one at a sports centre/clinic?

Thanks for your help!

Entrapment of the radial nerve

sounds like I have tennis elbow however it started a few years ago while working on art project and having to bend a lot of metal with wrong tools! Kept working through pain.Eventuallly pain went away (rt arm) but noticed a problem then and it has not changed.I once could throw a great game of darts. Since then I Cannot hit board even! Even concentrating the dart will miss board and hit to far left. The pain comes back only with excessive strain. The dart throwing is no big deal but is the reason for my question. Did I cause some perminent nerve damage? Even with no pain for months or years same thing happens. Lately my right pinky finger is numb and I also did a lot of heavy lifting the past wek and the pain is back. I know it will go away again but more conserned about nerve damage or other? entrapment of radial nerve maybe?

Chronic IT band pain

Man, I am close to my wit’s end. About a year ago I started my injury cycle with some hamstring tendonitis while mountain biking. I made it through the m.biking season, but by September/October my IT band started giving me trouble. I have seen a sports physician, two different physical therapists – I love my new one, and am completely compliant with stretching and rehab exercises. I also have hip flexor issues related to the quad attachments, and my piriformis is crabby and tight. Basically, my left leg is a basket case.

I can’t do any of my favorite activites. I learned how to swim over the winter and am left only with that. No snowboarding, skiing, biking, hiking – I can’t even walk my dog without pain.

The part that is most troubling is the fact that I have pain radiating down the lateral aspect of my lower leg. It originates near, but lateral to, the IT band insertion and shoots down my leg to my ankle and side of my foot. It totally sucks.

I am going to France next week, which is a big deal, a special trip, and I am thinking I may have to rent a scooter or be on crutches to do anything – especially in Paris.

Does anyone know if this pain sounds related to the IT band, or is it ANOTHER injury? I was thinking it may be nerve impingement. Any suggestions? BTW ibuprofen doesn’t even dent the pain. I am going to try Aleve today (wish I had some Vicotin ).

Sprain or tear???

I injured my ankle playing football (kicking the ground)one week ago. Although it seemed a very light injury (not very swollen, no big problems and pain walking), after one week of ice and rest it is still swollen, stiff and giving pain to many movements(apart walking). Should I be worried that, despite seemed a light sprain, there can be a ligament damage? How long should it take to heal? And when to restart running? Playing football?

Hip Flexor/Groin Pain

(4 discussions)

Well where do i start….

About 5 weeks ago i developed a pain/ache in my hip flexor area. This happened during a week off work. I dont remember doing anything that would cause this pain & it didnt appear through a strain that i would remember. I noticed it whilst trying to get up from sitting on the floor, it was aching & had been aching throughout the day, but when i got up, i got a sharp jab of pain from the hipflexor area. This has since then persisted for the last five weeks & doesnt seem to be getting any better.
I work as a Fitness Instructor and teach Step, Body Pump and Spinning. I can feel it whilst teaching step, body pump i have only felt the whole hip get tighter these last few weeks and i dont feel it at all during spinning.

When getting in to the car, i find it more comfortable to assist my leg in and out as i can feel it pulling while i do so.
Whilst sitting, i can push on the tendons in my hipflexor area and thats where im feeling the pain but it aches in my adductor muscle and outer hip area. Pulling my knees together i experience pain.
Whislt laying on the floor stretching i cannot do a hip stretch without feeling discomfort and also bringing the knees in to the chest is where i feel pain the most. During some abductor moves i get a clicking sound inthe hip which also causes discomfort.

Any ideas as to what i have done, what i need to do to treat it and how long will it take to heal?? Cheers

Ice & Heat Packs

(2 discussions)

Can you Ice for 20 min. and right after that heat for 20 min? My brother has a shoulder injury from gymnasics. He was on high bar and it was a strap bar so he doesn’t fall and he fell the other way. Sort of hard to explain, his arms/shoulders were basically bent really far backwards. We’re going to the hospital in a couple of days but ’till then I need to know.

So anyways, my mom and I are having an arguement and she told him to ice then heal, and i told him just to ice for 20min then off for 20 min, ice for 20 min, etc. Can you PLLZZZ help!!!

Shin splints or stress fracture

I just finished up my season for collegiate tennis. The season was very long, and there were very few days off. I have not done any running or any tennis for about 12 days now until today. When I tried a light jog today I had the same pain immediatly. The run only lasted about 10-15 minutes and I had the pain throughout. I have pain directly on top of my shin bone right about in the middle of my shin. I however usually do not have pain while walking. The only time I will is after a practice or a run. I didn’t have shin splints before this, and I feel kindof like the pain just popped up. I know they say it is usually a stress fractue if the pain is localized, and I have this, but I feel as though if it were a stres fracture it would hurt while walking. If I try and perform the “hop-test” I will have pain in my shin in the one area immediatly within the first jump or 2. How long do shin splints usually take to heal up. I feel like if it was shin splints it would be gone already. I am just concerned because I do need to start my summer training and there are tournaments coming up. I defintly do not want to be dealing with this next season either…

Any Ideas?
