Pain and recovery after a broken ankle

(2 discussions)

I fel off a ladder and broke my left ankle in two places on Nov. 9, ‘o4.
On December 30 finally my big black walking boot cast was removed and I was told I could now start walking on my foot and to not use my crutches much.
I asked if I should wear the tennis shoe I had brought with me contemplating the removal of the black boot.
I was told to use a hiking boot.
I said I would have to go buy one and then the Physicians assistant said they might have an ankle support around.
He did not know how to put it on but with my help we figured it out.
I was not told how long I should wear it.
He sort of inferred that I should wear it when I went to the grocery store, etc.
At first I walked around a bit in the house and could go a few steps without it.
Then it started to hurt and I put on the support and a shoe.
It seemed better, but the large ankle bone to the outside on my left foot has started to hurt.
Now it is all I can do to walk around.
I have to use crutches.
It feels better when I take the support off at night.
I called a nurse at the otho clinic and she told me I should have been wearing the support all the time except at night but not relying on the crutches.
She said I would need to wear the support for a long time.
What should I do about the persistant pain in the ankle bone? It itches inside and burns some.
Is it normal for it to be so tender within a week of removing the black walking boot? How long should I expect to experience the pain and will it gradually go away?
I was always seen by Physician Assistants except for the one time with an ortho surgeon who determined I would not need surgery.

You might want to ask for a referral to physical therapy. The PT can assess your present situation and help rehab your ankle. They are also helpful with selecting braces.

On May 3rd I dislocated and fractured my ankle in two places. I had surgery which included placing metal plate in my ankle. It has been non-weight baring since. On Thursday, June 22, I’m scheduled to have the cast removed. Typically, what happens next if everything has healed properly so far? Will I be able to drive again? Am I likely to have another cast put on? I would appreciate any information you can offer. Thank you
