Pain in my forefoot

My forefoot became sore a week ago and the next morning I woke up and could not put any weight on the foot and it was swollen.
I went to a walk in clinic and they X-Rayed it and said I had a fracture in my seismoids.
They set me up an appointment with an orthopedic and they put a splint on my foot and took some blood because they did not see any fractures.
I went back to them yesterday and they removed the splint and said that I have an infection.
How can I get an infection if there are no open wounds or fractures?
They gave me some antibotics to take until I go back and see them next week but they did not put anything else on my foot which is swollen and I still cannot put any weight on it.
If my foot is not elevated for a little bit, my toes start turning a dark color (almost black).
What is going on with my foot?

Without seeing your foot I can’t be sure. I agree that it would be unusual in an adult to have a bone infection without any breaks in the skin. Sesamoid fractures are difficult to see even for podiatrists sometimes. Until you know more, you might try to limit weight bearing, maybe use crutches.
