Pain on 2nd metatarsal, please help!!!

Hi,
I’ve been a serious runner for the past 5 years, and this season for my base I’ve run between 70-120 miles a week, for the past 14 weeks. Every day I’ve felt fine and have had no pain at all anywhere. Well last monday, I was on a 10 mile run in the afternoon, and experienced a pain on the 2nd metatarsal. I finished up the run, but on the 2 mile cooldown it was very painful. Well that night at dinner after icing it a ton, I was limping to get my food. I haven’t run for an entire week, and every day I’ve iced and heated it on and off for about 3x a day.
Today is a week from the last time I ran, and I ran 4 miles this afternoon just to test it out. There wasn’t much pain, but there was some there. I just don’t get this, and I can’t tell if it’s on the top or bottom of my foot!! When I push and smush hard all around the top of my foot where it is, I feel a slight something but nothing I would consider “painful” whereas when I push around on the bottom of my foot, I feel the same thing. I don’t know if it’s a pain on the top or bottom of my foot. I’m thinking it’s a stone bruise, but who knows. Do you have any ideas as to what it could be? I don’t really want to go to a doctor as I don’t have much money for that. Please help, thank you. 🙂

It is possible you have a stress fracture, but without seeing this and getting an x-ray, it is impossible to give you a really useful answer. My recommendation is that you see a podiatrist (preferably one who sees runners)In the interim, you might buy replacement insoles for your running shoes. You really do get what you pay for. A store that caters to runners should have a decent selection. Some brands to look at are Spenco, Sorbothane, and Sof.If your running shoes have 300+ miles on them, they are not considered good shock absorbers any longer.
