painful bump on the bottom of heel

I have had a bump on the bottom of my left heel for about three months now.
It is very painful in the morning when I wake up and hurts if I put my foot flat on the something such as a tile surface.
It feels better when I wear shoes.
I was told by my mother-in-law that it could be a planters wart and that I can only have it removed surgically.
I am planning on going on a school hiking trip with my daughters school in two weeks from now and I don’t have health insurance at the moment.
I have also heard of something called a Planter Fasciitis and want to know the difference between this condition and the Planters Wart.
Is there anything I can do on my own so that I can attend this trip with my daughter.
I would be so appreciative if you could advise me on this.
Thank you!

Plantar simply refers to a location- the bottom of the foot. A wart is a benign growth caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. On the plantar surface they tend to be pushed inwards due to weight bearing and therefore are more painful than in non-weight bearing areas. Many times warts will appear to have small black spots in them which are thrombosed capillary ends. The skin lines are also gone in a wart. Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the tendon like band that supports the arch. It is unlikely that it would be a bump on the bottom of the foot. There are many treatments for both these conditions. Surgery is not the only choice for either of them. As far as not having insurance, I can’t really tell you you must see a podiatrist, but really, you should. Discuss your concerns and options and go from there.
