Painful foot-calcium deposits
(2 discussions)
My daughter is having a awful time with her left foot, she has seen a doctor – had an xray -dr didn’t know what it was at first thought it was a bunion, then spur but xray shows it not attached to bone- thinks it is calcium deposit and can’t get into a specialist for a week, it is extremely painful – red, swollen some it is on left side of foot just down from big toe. She has an extremely hard time putting on socks or shoes or walking without extreme pain- what could it be when it is soooo painful she can’t sleep at night? If it is calcium deposits would taking extra calcium help at all? Thank You

I am always amazed at the number of people who are horribly fascinated by minor foot deformities. What you have is called a crossover toe or if you like, an overlapping toe. Truthfully, and I may be a throwback in this day of "cosmetic foot surgery," I would not recommend surgery unless pain and disability were symptoms.

I was born with an overlapping little toe on my right foot. It actually overlaps quite a bit to where it basically sits on top of the next to all the time. I wear sandals and go barefoot a lot and I’ve never had any problems walking or anything. When I was younger a doctor told me that unless the look of it bothered me a lot (it doesn’t at all!) that I should leave well enough alone.
