partial tear of medial meniscus

I partial tore my medial meniscus.
I slipped on some ice while running.
I had a mri done and it clearly showed a partial tear of the meniscus.
The orthopedic surgeon recommended I try 4 to 6 weeks rest of the knee to see if it might heal before doing surgery. Can the meniscus heal it self or am I wasting time?
I run 75 miles per week and am very active. the down time is driving me crazy.
What activities do you recommend during the down time and if I need surgery what time of recovery time should I expect?
