Patella tendon rupture

(2 discussions)

I had ruptured my patella tendon 5 weeks ago.
I had surgery and was going along ok, then Monday 1 day before I was to visit the doctor to see if I could start rehab disaster struck. As I was walking to the car on wet blacktop with my leg still immobilized and using crutches my right leg slipped into the air and my left leg ( the one just fixed ) attempted to keep me up. Anyways I reruptured the tendon and am facing my second surgery next week Tuesday. I am trying to find out what the rehab portion of this injury will be like I assume it will not be fun. Any info will be apreciated. Also I told my surgeon prior to the first surgery that I was a Marathon runner, he said that after an injury like this any running over a mile might prove to be very painful. Are my long distance running day’s behind me already? THanks.

Hey Mark, I had a complete rupture of my PT about one year ago. Just like you, I reinjured it. But I was able to recover and continue to run, after about 9-12 months. Hang in there; I know it is very depressing to be immobilized. Oh by the way, I am in the military where I run five of seven days a week, and carry rucksacks over 30 pounds. You have to be very patient and allow yourself to heal.johnjohn
