Patella Tendonitis

I was diagnosed with Patella Tendonitis 3 years ago. I am a college basketball player. I ice my knee everyday and take ibuprofen. I also use the strap while I play but it gives me a rash on the back of my leg, whether I wrap it or not. What is an alternative brace that could be used? Whats the best anti-inflammatory medicine? What are good excersices and stretches that I could do in practice or before a game?

    Malissa,
Before I write too much, do you have access to a Certified Athletic Trainer and/or a PT at your college? If so, have you seen them for this injury? If not, please do so ASAP. If so, what did they say, do, and recommend thus far? I am concerned with you taking Ibuprofen daily, as it can lead to a stomach ulcer. Once you get a stomach ulcer (or, at worst, a bleeding ulcer, you will no longer be able to take any sort of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and you will really be in trouble. Please let us know what the ATC or PT says if you have access to either. If not, then you really need to see a Sports Medicine oriented Orthopedist for X-rays, and exam, and a recent diagnosis and treatment plan. Ask the doctor for a referral to a PT if you don’t have one at the college. The Orthopedist or PT should be able to show you some exercises for your VMO muscle (one of the Quad muscles), and order you a knee brace if necessary. Please let us know how you make out, and good luck! PS… Please try to get off the daily Ibuprofen before it is too late!
