podiatrist VS orthopedic doc

(7 discussions)

I have been having pain in my foot for about 8 weeks, which is likely originating from the seismoid bone. I don’t know if I should see a podiatrist or an orthopedic doctor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Podiatry school is Not medical school no matter how hard they wish or try.

: : Dear Peregrine,: I have had this condition for over two years with (2) Podiatrists treatment..one made me very expensive shoe inserts, gave cortisone shots and the other provided shock treatments occassional cortisone for pain. I have purchased many different pairs of shoes, bought foot pads, inserts, take ibuproen regularly & still have intense pain that creates knee pain & at times I can’t even put pressure on my feet w/o extreme pain & yes I have boney feet… What can I do. My feet hurt all the time, whether I wear soft padded shoes, tennis shoes, heels,sandals…..

: :I would only seek an MD/DO orthopod. They go through consistent rigorours medical and surgical training. DPMS are like chiropractors, optometrists, they can do basic stuff like clipping toenails or trimming ddead skin, but for something involving bone, I wouls only see an orhtopod.. Podiatry school is easy to get into. Their schools are basic and their rotations are mediocre without consistency or on par with real medical schools. If someone is going to operate on me I would definitely go to the person who is most qualified and has the most intellect–and those types do NOT choose podupetry.

Podiatrists, chiropodists are great. They clip my father’s nails, they make orthotics that are a bit expensive, and they tried to get rid of my bunion, It was not hurting. but I said no to any surgery. they were pushy though.

i was diagnosed with seismoiditis yesterday – as a result of a vitamin D deficiency. i’m taking 1.25 mg (50000 units) Vitamin D (with calcium for absorption), 2x/week for 6 weeks then I’ll have to take off the shelf supplements of both. Hopefully that is all it will take!!!!! I had MRI of one foot and blood work – both same result. Hands bad, too, same thing, imflammation and bone marrow edema expected to be the culprit. Feet need heat to go to sleep. In morning feel like they’re cramped up when my feet hit the floor.

If it is minor, get a pod, if any thing medical get an ortho-they went to medical school licensed by the LCME, took USMLEs, and and ACGME residency. Pods currently do not. this is a major problem, and impediment to the anemic profession.

They do attend medical school and have 50 different scopes of practice in the 50 diff states. Their training is variable and it is much easier to get into podiatry training school than LCME medical school (MD).
