Pressure on large toe

My son is a fastpitch softball pitcher.
The large toe on the foot he lands on when he strides.
The constant pressure from this causes bleeding under the toe nail and causes a lot of pain.
The only thingWe’ve had success with is a gel toe sock.
He went through one of these per game.
At $10 per covering we would spend over $800 per year on this.
Is there something else that we can try that is less expensive?
