Proper healing of broken clavical

My 15 year old son broke his collarbone during a H.S. baseball game. The fracture looked like a drawbridge. After two weeks the x-ray revealed the two bones are not touching (actually overlapping) with a gap of approx. 1/2 inch between them. The best way I can describ this is that if you ran your finger along the bones it would feel like a step down.
Is this the normal healing process for such a break? Thanks

No need to worry. Clavicular fractures almost always heal without complications, even if they look like they could not possibly heal. I think that your son’s Orthopedist would have told you if he had any concerns with eventual healing. If he didn’t, I would not worry. No one likes a fracture, but if you have to have one, a clavicle fracture is one of the easier ones to treat, and to heal. Let us know how your son makes out in about 6 weeks… He shoud be back to doing his normal activities by then.

Did your son’s clavical eventually heal without surgery? How long did it take? My break is very similar. I am in my 4th week of recovery and am very frustrated. Please respond. Thanks.

I’m 35 and 10 days ago I broke my left clavicle…again. Yee-haa! There is now a golfball-sized bone formation at the break, which is a good sign of healing. However, I stll feel the bones clicking together…is this ‘normal’? I realize I’ll need to go 6-8 weeks for this old fellow to heal fully, but I’m a bit concerned that I may be experiencing a non-union. Shall I be worried about this? The clicking with the golfball is normal, isn’t it? Please advise.

dude go see a doc … imobalize thqat sensored w/ a sling … I just got my non union fixed w/ eight screws and a titanium plate … you don’t want to go through that … good luck ps- My Doc was Mcfarland at JHU

hello recently I broke my r clavical and was wearing a figure 8 brace and sling after 21/2 weeks not much change now been told not to wear 8 brace and will heal but with slight bump ,ive noticed a clicking feeling which I attribute to the break still at this time how long for this to heal? and what else can I do ?,ive been fitted with different types opf braces cause original to large and I don’t feel I’m gettin proper answers from doc nurse called a bone doc and I was told they don’t use figure 8 anymore is this true? also if does heal how strong is it from here on? my break is only slightly misalighned . thank u very much gcw

doesn’t sound like it … just got my non union fixed w/ eight screews and a titanium plate at JHU w/ Dr Mcfarland … don’t mess around see a solid ortho doc today!!! Good luck
