re: POST CHEVRON BUNIONECTOMY

(2 discussions)

I AM 17 DAYS POST-OP FROM A BUNIONECTOMY AND OSTEOTOMY WITH A DISOLVABLE PIN IN THE FIRST METATARSAL. (DEFINITELY HEREDITARY AS MY MOTHER AND I HAVE EXACT BUNIONS) I AM A REGISTERED NURSE AND HAVE ALWAYS WORN CORRECT, WIDE TOE BOX SHOES..NOT ONE MUCH FOR POINTY OR HIGH HEELS OTHER THAN AN OCC WEDDING. BIG DECISION, LOTS OF RESEARCH AND GLAD I HAD IT DONE. I WILL HAVE THE LEFT ONE DONE PROBABLY NEXT YEAR. FIRST 3 DAYS NWB, CRUTCHES FOR BATHROOM ONLY, NEXT 5 DAYS PWB WITH CRUTCHES, AND FINALLY STITCHES OUT, FWB AND SPECIAL SHOE. ICE AND ELEVATION ARE NOW MY BEST FRIENDS…..
I DO HAVE A QUESTION ON THOUGHTS OF MEDERMA FOR SCARS, ( MY DOC HAS NO FAITH IN IT) AND ALSO APPROXIMATELY WHEN NUMBNESS WILL SUBSIDE AND FLEXIBILITY ( KNOWING FULL WELL NOT 100% FLEXIBILITY OF THE GREAT TOE IS ALWAYS 100%) THOUGHT I’D ASK THE DR. OF THIS FORUM AS WELL AS ANY OTHER POST-OPS THEIR EXPERIENCE? THANKS, TRISHA.

I had both feet done Oct. 2014. I had both feet fractured, toes realigned and pins put in. It has almost been 5 months and I’d say about 2 months ago I finally had all feeling in both feet. My left foot took a bit longer for the numbness to go away. I was getting a little nervous it was never going to come back, since the dr. said it was a possibility. But it came back. Flexibility also took a while. Right foot 2 months, left 3 months and I am still having pain and range of motion issues with the left foot. I am actually going to the Dr. today to see if we need to do something or if it will just take time. This was a lot more painful than I expected and is taking a bit longer to fully recover, but I am happy I did it so far. Would I do it again? Probably not. Thanks to my mom staying with me to help me with my 2 kids and husband for 3 weeks I don’t think I could have done it without her! Good luck in your recovery. Everyone is different in how they recover, but I thought I’d let you know my situation.

Michelle, thanks for your quick reply to my post. I was fortunate to do it when my kids are grown and moved out and one in college.. It must be more difficult with smaller children. I would do it again because the deformity not only was unsightly but I could not find any shoes to fit anymore and I had pain with walking.. I’m hoping I won’t have any residual effects and I’ve followed all instructions to the letter, although I do know every patient heels differently and i’ve certainly read some stories where patients never required even a tylenol to those that were taking pain pills months later.. It is a rough surgery and such an insult to the body and afterall, we depend on our feet for everything.. Thanks for your reply and hope for a full recovery for you as well, if it wasn’t for my husband, the million ice packs, my laptop and chocolate, I don’t know how I could have gotten through it…
