recovery from 5th metatarsal fracture

(5 discussions)

I fractured the base of the 5th metatarsal in my right foot about 7 weeks ago and was put into a removable cast (Aircast foam walker boot). One week ago, the doctor took more x-rays and said the fracture had healed and to slowly resume normal activity — no need for a soft brace, ace bandage, etc. for support, no PT needed, no specific exercises to rebuild strength. Once I got home, I tried walking on it and experienced quite a bit of pain. I called the doctor and he said to wear the cast when needed, but try to go without whenever possible. Now, one week later, I am still experiencing discomfort when walking. It almost feels like the bone will snap again if I put too much pressure on it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I JUST fractured my fifth metatarsal, and I’m reading up on these other stories and this doesnt sound too good! I’m 17, so I don’t knowif that by any chance would make a difference in my healing process, the doctor at the walkin clinic told me it would only be 6 weeks, the swelling is somewhat going down, considering that this just happened yesterday afternoon. they didn’t give me an aircast, but I haven’t gone to an actual doctor yet. I also surf and I really wanted to get back up again, and SOON! is there any hope for me?!?!

I also fractured my 5th metatarsal. It took 9 weeks to heal and I had to go into a fiberglass cast for the final 4 weeks. My DPM told me I could resume activities and I also experienced pain and swelling (which increased). I returned to my DPM and he said I had tendonitis. Now I am scheduled for PT and Ultrasound treatment(s). Do you recommend a brace to prevent this? Also, what is a “J” strap? My Doc said I should get one from the PT Dept. : Now, one week later, I am still experiencing discomfort when walking. It almost feels like the bone will snap again if I put too much pressure on it. I fractured my 5th metatarsal 10 weeks ago and have had no healing process. I am now using a bone stimulator but have been told this may not work either. Has anyone had this experience and if so how long does this take?!Thanks, kay : : I fractured the base of the 5th metatarsal in my right foot about 7 weeks ago and was put into a removable cast (Aircast foam walker boot). Diana, I hope by now you are doing much better. I fractured the base of the fifth metatarsal on my left foot on Nov. 21st and walked on it for two days before going to the hospital. (It was the day before Thanksgiving and I had out of town guests.) I spent the next week with my foot elevated or on crutches until the swelling went down. I then wore an air cast for two weeks, and am now in an ankle brace and sneakers. I can honestly say that it has not really hurt at all, once I quit walking on it that first few days. Right now, walking, even without the brace causes no pain. Just a bit of hope for those of you who have this injury and are wondering what is going to come next. Good luck to those of you who are not so lucky. Perhaps you have Jones fractures, which are far more difficult to heal.
