ribs popping out

(9 discussions)

hi, I wanted to post a link to the one sent in by kim on sept 12 (re her friends ribs popping out). I am so relieved to hear that someone else is suffering from the same problem as me (although sorry for them too!). I have been suffering from my ribs popping out (from T5 and 6) for over a year (it wasn’t diagnosed correctly until about 5 months ago). After seeing (and spending plenty of money on) osteopaths, homeopaths and physiotherapists I started seeing a chiropracter who ‘crunched’ me back into place. only trouble was that the crunching caused considerable pain afterwards and my ribs popped out again incredibly easily (i had to see him three times in one week). i’m now seeing a different chiropractor who is working more on massaging/manipulating the ribs back into place, but again they’re still popping out so easily (eg went to see her yesterday and they’d popped out by the same evening). this latest chiro has given me exercises to do – i’m doing low level pilates and she’s also given me a limited number of yoga exercises to do. sometimes they help, sometimes they exaggerate the problem, and i’ve recently started taking flaxseed oil as apparently this helps with joints, etc.
i’m desparate for this to be over – I haven’t slept properly since it all started (the ribs are like an alarm clock – waking me up at virtually spot-on 5am every morning) and have tension in my neck and shoulder as a result so am never comfortable. if anyone would like to comment/give advice i’m keen to hear anything you’ve got to offer. what I really want to know is how can I stop the ribs from continuously (easily) popping out? is it really a slow, slow case of core stability exercises to build up strength in my back? should I be doing yoga/pilates? what else can I do?

Hello fellow poppers. I’m a 76 year old male. I fell Jan 5. The edge of a stair hit in between my left hip and rib cage. The Xray showed no fractures but there was a lot of pain at first. Most of the pain has gone away but there is a lot of rib popping going in the lower left ribs. The area remains puffy. Fortunately for me the popping does have an associated pain. It scares me at times because I think it may be my heart. When do you think I’ll stop popping? I think we have more questions than answers. Can’t find much on the internet about this problem. Jim

HiI Too am suffering from the after effects of having my ribs “popped back in place” I believe they are T2 & T3 although not positive on this – they are near my shoulder blade. It started by lifting my baby who was in her car seat which was set in the crib, up and out of the crib using one hand. The pain started that night when I could hardly roll over and didn’t know how I was going to lift my baby to feed her. It slowly got somewhat better on its own until I had bronchitis and I suppose this made it worse again. It took two prescriptions of antibiotics to control the bronchitis but the burning in my back and wheezing were still there. I went to my chiri and he told me I had two ribs out of place so he popped them back and five minutes after leaving the clinic I put one of them out again – second adjustment! I am finding that the pain now (the day after adjustment) is actually worse than before adjustment – don’t know what to do from here – any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

:Hi. I, too have been plagued by ribs popping out. It started in October 2013 with a progrssively worse “knot” under my right shoulder blade. After many dr visits and excruciating pain, I was finally sent to a chiro. R5 had to be put back in 3 times over the course of the next couple of months. On Jan 5 of this year I went to him saying the pain was all the way across both shoulder blades. He popped R5 back in and 2 days later I was back to see him with L5 out for the first time. Have not had to go back since, but am still off work as any repetitive use of my left arm results in more pain under blade as well as the shoulder and neck tightening you mentioned. My right side seems fine. Odd, I think

I am also in the same boat. I have been going to my chiropractor now for 8 months with the same problem. I have discovered that if you take a couple of advil just before going to bed you can sleep thru the night. I was just at my chiropractors office two days ago to have my ribs popped back in, it is my top two on my right side, I am also very desperate to have this problem resolved. My chiropractor told me that it takes like 8 months for the ligaments to go back tonormal after your ribs have been out, but that is without irritating them, which I seem to keep doing. I am not sure how it keeps happening to me but am sick of it happening, it is painful. It has been two days since I was at the chiroprator and am still hurting and feeling bloated from the treatment.

Hello, I have some questions.. When your ribs pop out does it do it all the time like everytime you laugh, yell, and when your breathing hard like when you sprint, caugh? everytime, I don’t think that I have ever had an injury there before and it does it on both sides I have tried everything I have had an mri, x-rays, and nothing shows up and I just need to know if it is the same. Please if someone could respond asap that would be great. Thank you so much Jessica

I fell about 5 weeks ago and have hurt around my shoulder blade and under my arm causing terrible muscle spasms. I went to the doctor and he said I had popped a rib out and he put it back in and gave me muscle relaxer pills to take. The next week it popped out again. These spasms ar4e about mopre than I can handle they hit all at once and you hollow immediately because you are not expecting it and grab under your arm to try to help the pain. Is this normal? Do I need to have a xray ThankS

:Hi fellow poppers!!!!! I started with this problem about ten years ago when I first got my two dogs, I experienced spasms and muscle tension across my shoulders. After many trips to my Chiro without any lasting results I decided to pop them back myself with a little help from my kids!!!!!Yes correct ,they walk up and down my whole back until they get popped back in, its much cheaper trust me!!!!
