Ruptured Calf – need strengthening exercises

A couple years ago I managed to rupture my right calf muscle in a softball game.
Was just running from 2nd to 3rd and heard and felt a SNAP! and went down in a heap. (everyone reading take note – STRETCH WELL before you exercise!) Orthopedic surgeon advised against any reconstructive surgery b/c in his opinion it was less than 50/50 that surgery would improve it anymore than just working through it.
In the time since the injury I have gotten out of shape, since all my life RUNNING is the way I kept in shape and, still, running hurts my calf very much and it will occasionally give out and drop me to the ground. So I am stuck doing stationary bike and walking and weights.
This still hurts the calf on occasion and sometimes I will have raging muscle spasms in it. Especially if there was much downhill involved, or walking down a long flight of stairs. Uphill doesn’t bother it.Are there any good exercises you can recommend that will strengthen my calf? Or, more properly, my “two halves of a calf”? The rupture is exactly in the center and visible – as if I have a tight rubber band around my leg there. I want to get back into shape again, calf notwithstanding, and I’d love to get some suggestions for helping it get as close to better as it can. And maybe go running again someday, even! Thanks.
