Ruptured lower bicep tendon

(3 discussions)

Hi Terry. I was at the gym this morning (I’m 45, but have been working out with weights, off and on, since the age of 16 and still have good muscle definition. At least till today. I was doing 35 pound preacher curls and hyperextended my right arm at the third curl. I felt this snapping sensation three times, as if three elastic bands had been snapped in my bicep, with a pain of 10/10 at each snap. I was in agony. I placed an ice pack on the area right away and, when I removed the ice 20 minutes later, I noticed something horrible the lowest third of my bicep was gone! About three full inches of my bicep is not there anymore. I went to a clinic and was told by the doctor that the bicep tendon or tendons has ruptured and that it may remain like this for the rest of my days. He referred me to an orthopedic surgeon, but things in Canada sucking big time when it comes to medecine, it may take week or months to get an appointment with a specialist. Do you think this type of damage is repairable, is it worth it (I am in quite a bit of pain when my arm is extended in any position BUT with my fist facing forward) and what are the possible downsides to this surgery? Thanks so much for your kind advice.

Okay, I haven’t heard from you and need to make a decision regarding surgery by next week. I can have my ruptured lower distal tendon repaired, but I understand there are some risks associated with the surgery. The worst of these are the risk of nerve damage, leaving me without the ability to raise my hand using my wrist, and the possibility of calcium deposits preventing me from rotating my arm. I need to know the percentage these risks may occur. Also, I am a writer and use my right arm to write and type…. would YOU recommend the surgery, or am I better off with 20-25 percent less strength in my right arm for the rest of my life? I could really use your advice… anyone…. as I am frozen with indecision and don’t have the luxury of time in which to make one. Thank you.

I just incurred the same exact injury 5 days ago. (I clothes-lined a tree skiing in CO) I am going to see a Orthopod tomorrow, but I would very much like to hear any advise.
