scar tissue elbow

(3 discussions)

MY SON IS 13 YRS. OLD, HE FELL OFF HIS SKATEBOARD AND HAD A MINOR FRACTURE IN THE ELBOW BACK IN MAY OF THIS YEAR.
THE DOCTOR DID CAST IT FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS, AFTER THE CAST CAME OFF WE WERE TOLD TO START EXERCISING IT AFTER A FEW DAYS. AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS I CALLED THE DOCTOR BECAUSE HE DIDN’T GAIN BACK HIS EXTENSION OF HIS ARM.
WE STARTED THERAPY AND AFTER ABOUT A MONTH, THE THERAPIST SAID SHE COULD NOT GET IT ANY STRAIGHTERHE WAS AT ABOUT 45 DEGREE ANGLE.
WE HAD SURGERY 9-11-03, SCAR TISSUE WAS REMOVED AND WE STARTED THERAPY RIGHTAWAY.
WELL ITS BEEN ABOUT A MONTH NOW, WITH 2 DIFFERENT BRACES,ONE BEING A DYNA BRACE AND WE’RE NOT MUCH BETTER.
I’M JUST ABOUT GOING CRAZY IT FEELS LIKE I’M FIGHTING A LOSING BATTLE WITH HIS ARM.HE’S A GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER AND DID PLAY ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT LEAGUES AND I HATE TO THINK THAT HE’S GOING TO LOSE IT ALL. ANY IDEAS? SHOULD SURGERY BE DONE AGAIN? IS ANYTHING GOING TO WORK? THANK YOUBRIDGET

I’m sorry to hear about your son having to go through this at such a young age. I have had surgery on my elbow from a fall on a concrete floor. My ulnar nerve was impinged at my elbow and caused my hand to go numb and pain in my elbow. The ulnar nerve is on the inside of the elbow and runs all the way to the back of the neck. I would like to say that when you have surgery scar tissue developes. When you have another surgery to remove the scar tissue you run the risk of creating more scar tissue. Be careful and try other treatments before attempting another surgery. I wish you and your son the best of luck.

Sorry about your son, Ask a doctor, I would call up a well known surgeon like james andrews in birmingham AL. I can tell you he will have problems in baseball, especially a pitcher or catcher, with a bent elbow, it probably will lead to shoulder problems. I had elbow surgery and didn’t realize how important range of motion was until it was too late. What will happen especially if he pitches is, his arm wont get the maximum velocity and his arm will get sore and stay sore longer than usual. It can get straight again because I had a spur later taken out and with good therapy it can get close to normal, YOU MUST GET A SEASONED THERAPIST! NOT SOME 22 YR OLD WHO DID IT ONCE OR TWICE OR NEVER!make some phone calls and see who does the major league and college kids around your area. Get it straight as soon as possible, hopefully a seasoned therapist can do the job without any surgery. Good luck! I had 3 elbow surgeries and now at age 37 I’m getting a shoulder done, I’m a lefty pitcher and mine went when I was 19 with the Minn twins in their minor league spring training in 1986. Any more baseball questions? I would be glad to help.

You have to get that elbow as straight as possible, it will lead to shoulder problems, and he wont be able to maximize his velocity and his elbow will get sore and stay sore longer than normal. GET A SEASONED THERAPIST, THAT WAS MY MISTAKE! RANGE OF MOTION IS EVERYTHING! My elbow was badly bent but I needed another surgery for a spur and I did get if very close to normal with seasoned therapists. Too many young therapists out of college and don’t know anything so these poor people who just got good surgery now don’t heal right and blame the surgeon! When I was 19 I blew my elbow out with the twins in their minor league spring training and I’m now 37 with 3 surgeries behind me and I’m getting my shoulder done next month. I would be happy to answer any baseball question you have, just fire away about anything, schools, doctors, type of pitches etc LOL Good Luck!
