Scheuermann’s Disease

(27 discussions)

I am looking to find out if going to a chiropractor can help my 27 year old niece who has been diagnosed with Scheuermann’s disease.
She seems to rely on pain killers and I believe she is getting too dependant on them.
I wanted to know if anyone had good results from a chiropractor for this disease.

26 year old male, have had Scheuermanns since I was about 14, but just diagnosed with it about 3 years ago. Have been to two different chiropractors, physical therapy, you name it. All to no avail. Had two different orthopedic surgeons tell me they won’t operate on me because “the risk outweighs the benefit”. They have all more or less told me take ibuprofen and grin and bear it. All the while paying thousands of dollars for these appointments. Every day from the time I get up until the time I go to bed at night is excruciating pain. I work construction for a living, which doesn’t hurt me as bad as just standing or sitting (I guess the moving around helps or maybe it’s just taking my mind off of it for a while). Plus my dad is 67 and eat up with arthritis and he can’t do much physically anymore. So I want to be there for him. It’s difficult for me to go to work every day and then come home and keep house. I don’t want to live the rest of my life on pain medicine even though sometimes I need something the pain is so bad. But they won’t give me anything other than some kind of junk inflammatory that I might as well flush. Even if the pain is treated the problem will still be there. I have some shortness of breath and reflux in my esophagus which I attribute to my spinal deformity. It’s also mentally dibilitating walking around looking like a question mark. I feel lonely as obviously I have never had a girlfriend. I feel like why would any woman want a relationship with a man that looks like he belongs in a freak show? Not really asking a question just needed to vent I guess. Anyone who has this disease I want you to know I am praying for you! We don’t always understand the reasons why we go through things like this but Our Heavenly Father can change any situation and He can bring healing in His time. I know that doesn’t make it any less miserable in the mean time. Please stay strong!

My 14 year old son has been diagonosed with Scheuermans’s disease by my own Chiropracter. He has had several x rays and visits to a Consultant withopur diagonoses. My chiropractor who I belive and trust states that she is able to treat him. What is a back spesensoredt? What type of surgery is involved? There is very little information about this disease. Many thanks

I am a 47 year old surviver of Scheuermans Disease. At the age of 13, I was diagnosed with the first stage of Scheuermans at Vandrebuilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Since that time the disease has progressed through stage two and on to what the Doctors refer to as stage three. I will try to explain what each stage has been and what my doctors have done to stop and or eliminate the pain that comes with the. Disease.
Stage one – the severe over groth of bone on the vertabraes causing pain in the areas where the bones are pushing on the nerve roots and discs. I found that the most severe pain was in my Lumbar and Cervical areas. At this point the Doctors gave me injections of steroids and novacaine. Unfortunately this just masked the pain and did not do anything to fix the problem.
Stage Two – begain with the thining of the bones, causing bone spures to rupture disks between the areas of most use (hips and neck). At this point the Orthopedic Doctors had to do surgery to remove the bone spurs and disk material that were damaged.
Stage Three – this is where the bones started to disentigrate causing spinal-cord damage and parallises of my right leg. The Doctors at Orlando Regional Hospital believe that there may be a Stage Four. After working with the Orthopedic Doctors, and not getting any real relief, I found Doctor Jonathan Greenburge, a Neuro-Sergeon specializing in spinal-cord injuries.
I will be happy to talk to any one about this. e-mail me at cmebye614@**** or call @ 1-407-756-****

I was 15 when Diagnosed. I was going to a Chiropractor before I saw a back spesensoredt. depending on the curve of the spine will determine what needs to be done. I suggest to see a spesensoredt and get second opinions. I had a very severe curve and i was done growing so i had to have sugery. If you have any question feel free to E-Mail me.

I am in the Army and am 26 now. I was diagnosed at 24years old. A good osteopath/chiropractor helped me a lot. But having to do Army activity or any painful activity will undo the good work the Osteopath does just as fast. Due to this i am more reliant on pain killers just as is Moro’s Daughter.

I would strongly suggest staying away from a chiropractor. I have the same disease of the spine and suffered a bulging disc due to a work injury- a chiropractor said he could help as I told him I would not let him touch me if he felt it would cause more problems. After 1 treatment, the pain was increased, after 2, I could not walk-my disc had become herniated and was pressing on the disc due to the treatments. Surgery was necessary after a long year of agony waiting for surgery. Please think a lot before a chiropractor sees her. Sometimes patience and a lot of rest is a better alternative to healing. Good Luck!

Can you tell me if you have continued with Chiropracter? My son has probably had Scheuermann’s since he was eight and just now at the age of 17 has finally now been diagoinsed. He has been seeing a chropracter for several years. I guess I could say that it has brought general releif when the pain is very extreme.

Hey there, first of all, thank you for your time. I am 25 yrs old, I practice martial arts 5 times a week and 2-3 times a week I am using weights. I have scheuermann, but my back doesn’t hurt really bad, sometimes it does when I try too hard to correct my posture. What should I do to get it better? Does this stop in time? Is it dangerous? Thank you.

I was diagonosed with Scheuermann’s disease when I was 13 I am now 20. I live with the pain everyday, I would suggest not to have lots of rest normally it aggravates the spine more, but a bath helps to loose out the muscles. I self medicated myself for 4 years with alcohol that only relieved the pain for awhile, I don’t suggest it personally. My specialist told I that a brace and surgery was not an option in my case…in fact he told me that I would grow out of it. I don’t know how one can grow out of a hereditory disease myself. I had a Chiropractor/kinesologist for about 3 years… I slowly stopped going because it started to hurt more and more I would go. I put out my back twice over the years. The back pain neither worsens nor decreases it just sames as it is everyday very uncomfortable with tears running down my cheeks when I am at work. But one day maybe I will be pain free…

Hello! My 13 year old son has recently been diagnosed with lumbar scheuremanns. He has back, knee and leg pain. The doctors say there is not much info on this and his symptoms are more severe than they have seen but can’t find another cause. He has not started physio yet. We would love to hear your experiences with this problem and hope your situation has improved. Thanks, Theresa S.

I was diagnosed with Scheuermann’s disease about 3 years ago, am 46, and have had back pain since adolescence. Over the past 5 years, it has become close to unbearable. Has anyone had any luck with injections? If so, which levels and what type of injections were helpful?

I have just been recently diagnosed with scheurmann’s disease. I am 25 years old. I went to a chiropractor before I knew what was wrong and it didn’t help very much. I have just recently gone to a physiotherapist and it seems to help much better. The physio guy said because the discs in the backl become more brittle because of the compression the disease causes, spine manipulation should be avoided at all costs because the dics could rupture. I found weight loss, moderate exercise (1 hour 5 days a week) and physiotherapy have helped considerably.

With Scheuermann’s, it is very important to see a chiropractor regularly. The reason why this is important is that your body has been developing a certain way for so many years, and when done regularly[meaning at least once a week]–chiropractic care will enable your body to function properly, increasing your quality of life! It does take time to get to where you need to be, but trust me when I tell you that you have to be patient, especially with Scheuermann’s.

BE CAREFULL!! I am a 42 year old male who has been fighting surgerys and pain caused by Scheuermans Disease for almost 20 years. I have had several years of diasbility due disc herniations in Thoracic (4) and Lumbar (2)areas caused by Scheuermans with < 65 degrees of Kyphosis. I presently live on Oxycontin, Flexerol, and ocassionally Prednisone. Prednisone is a huge help when taken. (about every 6 months) I go to a Chiro for ultrasound and massage. In the past I have had Chiro’s adjust my mid back only to cause months of pain. An airbed and a Tens unit help, but the pain meds and mussle relaxers help me live as close to normanl as I can. Attitude is key, she can’t give up as the disease won’t. She can live a relativly normal life if she finds a doctor willing to help her. Drugs are harder and harder to get due to street use by idiots messing things up for those of us who need them.

I am 33 years old, I was told I had scheuermanns when I was 20, I’m sure it goes back farther than that. As far back as I can remember as a child I was always being told to stand up straight. I have been to chiropractors and it doesn’t seem to help. I now have bone spurs T7-T10, 2 healed compression fractors I didn’t even know I had cause I was always in so much pain. Some days I don’t think I can get out of bed. Doctors say there is not much to do for it. HELP!!!!

i am 37 and suffering with this since I was early teens, but the thing that is making matters worse is it is bothing my breathing(very bad)and I don’t know what to do? is anyone else having this issue with their back or heard of this?

Chiropractic is extremely important for anyone with Scheuermanns! A physio or PT are not educated to the degree of a chiropractor and will often times tell patients false information. Like the previous response for example… Sheuermanns does not make the discs brittle. What chiropractic will do is ensure that the joints in the back have motion in them because as the joints lose their motion they begin to degenerate (you don’t use it, you lose it). So it is particularly improtant for people with Sheuermanns to have their spine adjusted by a chiropractor because their is already some degree of spinal degeneration involved with the disease. Chiropractic will not cure this disease however many people have found it to help decrease the curve and keep it from getting worse.
