screws in foot

(3 discussions)

I’m 7 weeks post-op, with two screws put in the first metatarsal joint. The Dr. said something prior to surgery about not knowing if they would stay in or not, he would like them to, but did’nt sound to hopeful.
How can you tell if they may need to come out besides pain?

Lori, I had two pins and a wire put in my fifth metatarsal break back in October. I still cannot bear weight. My doctor says my pins should stay in. Is your screw currently sticking out of the foot or is it all internal? How are you getting around?

I had the surgery Sept. 30th, I see the Dr. tomorrow at 7 weeks. I’m supposed to be able to bear weight. No screws sticking out, just two screws internally that he hopes will stay in. The screws are on the top of the foot, holding the joint in the middle. Lots of swelling if it’s down too long and the incision is a pain because it’s on the top and everything rubs on it. Lots of nerve “waking up” pain. I have a big boot that I wear. I use crutches.

Hi Lori, I had a cheilectomy osteotomy with 2 screws in March. I had swelling and pain near the site of the screws which would not go away, so 2 weeks ago I had the screws out. It was another surgery, with the velcro boot., but much less swelling than before, and no real pain. I’ve already noticed that the swelling that I had on the top of my foot is non-existent. Time will tell if if your screws need to come out. 7 weeks is still too early, I think. I really didn’t notice mine until month 4.
