Sesamoid bones
(2 discussions)
One of the sesamoid bones in my big toe is split in half.
The pain flares up quite often. Is it a good idea to have it removed? What are the long term affects?
I wear pads in my shoes but this does’nt always help.

Sesamoids can sometimes be bipartite. Conservative treatment can include immobilization, padding, orthotics, injections of cortisone (only for chronic problems) and if all else fails- surgery. As far as if it is a good idea to remove it or not. There is no answer that is always for everyone. You really need to discuss this with your doctor and make an informed discuss after having all your concerns addressed.

I have a broken sesamoid. I do not want to have surgery. I wore a supportive shoe for 5-6 weeks. I am about 38. Should I continue to be in pain? Are there alternatives to removing my sesamoid bone. Should it be replaced with something else? Can the bone still heal after 8 weeks if treated with orthotics? Please help.
