severe stroke and therapy

My mother had a severe stroke after heart valve replacement and bypass surgery on Feb. 17th.
Her whole left side is affected.
She can move her right side but her right foot has severe foot drop. She was in hospital care until Apr. 2nd where she moved into a skilled nursing care facility that offered therapy.
The therapy stopped for her this past week on May 10th.Here is my (and the family’s) frustration. Ever since she had the stroke we have been told that recover from a stroke can take 6 to 12 months.
However the system does not seem to allow for this recovery time. Due to her being on Medicare, the therapists say she has plateaued and Medicare will no longer pay for therapy. Is there anything we can do to keep therapy going? Thank you for your time.Frank Sikora

My mother-in-law also survived a severe stroke. She too is on Medicare. I have spoke to Medicare and they will only pay bills in the skilled nursing facility for 100 days from the day she is admitted. That is all no if’s, and’s or but’s. From what we have been told from our internist and neurologist, most of the big recovery so to speak would take place within 3 months. The 6-12 months as we were told is very is the small stuff so to speak. My mother in law lost all peripheral vision and is completely paralyzed on the left side. She is on pureed foods as well due to the left sided neglect. She has been in the Skilled Nursing Facility for 60 days now and I have not noticed alot of change in her condition. She is definately more alert and her speech has improved but nothing is happening with her arm and she can only “twitch” the upper part of her thigh on the left side. I don;t know if I have been of any help, but if you have any information that may be of assistance to us, please let me know.
