Sever’s Disease

(3 discussions)

My 9 year old daughter is a competitive gymnast. Her podiatrist just diagnosed her with Sever’s Disease. I give her lots of Advil and she is very good about using ice after training. All of these things help. What Iam looking for is some type of heel cushion she can wear while tumbling and vaulting. She needs something to take the “edge off”. She trains 4 days a week 4 hours a day and has 1 day of ballet. Unfortunately, taking time off to rest is just not an option for her. Iam really hoping there is something available to give her heel some cushion. Thank you…Sue

What you can do is freeze a bottle of water and have her roll her foot along the floor as it acts as a light massage then as well. For a heel cushion you can find them in a drug store, even just get a shoe insole and cut it up, if she still feels no difference try cuttin the middle out so you have a donut shape as then there will be no pressure onto the foot either. I know some gymnasts when they tumble they take a sock cut the toes off of it and fold it over their heel about 2 layyers thick (make sure it’s a thick sock) and that helps to avoid some of the hard impact.

She’s 9 years old. Yes, taking time off IS an option for her. Both of my children have Sever’s and it is very painful. However, reducing activities, doing stretches, and using heel cushions has helped. If you don’t give this time to heal, she could end up with a cast on her foot for 2 to 6 weeks.
