sever’s disease

my 11 yr old son was diagnosed as having sever’s disease by a sports medicine physician. the diagnosis was confirmed by an orthopedic surgeon. my son plays many sports, but predominantly baseball and basketball. the pain is not so great that he cannot play but after practices and games he has considerable discomfort. he won’t tolerate ice. i’ve put quality insoles in his shoes and they’ve provided some but not complete relief. his feet are still very small (size 4.5) and he’s yet to start any meaningful growth spurt. any suggestions to get him through what sounds like will be the next 2-3 yrs? I have better odds of winning the lottery than I do having him take some time off of sports to rest.

If both of his feet are hurting him I would have arthritis ruled out by a good Rheumatologist. What concerns me is that he has not had his growth spurt yet and that is usually when severs disease becomes symptomatic. There is a good book you might want to take out of the library written by my Daughters Rheumatologist (yes she has arthritis) called: “It’s Not Just Growing Pains”, by Dr. Thomas Lehman. You will be able to learn a little more about how sever’s disease is often misdiagnosed.
If it is sever’s disease your son’s foot or feet should be taped prior to playing ball.
