sharp pain in callus on ball of foot

I woke up this morning with a sharp pain — feels like a piece of glass is embedded — in the callus in the upper ball of my foot.
It does not hurt at all when there is no pressure, but only hurts (a lot!) when I try to step on it.
I have never had this before.
I did not wear any unusual shoes in the last few days or do anything else to my feet that I can think of. Do I just give it a few days to work it out, or could this be something serious?

The only way I could answer this is to examine it. I recommend you have it checked out by a podiatrist. To see is to know, not to see is to guess.
