Shattered broken ring finger on right hand.

(3 discussions)

I severly broke the ring finger on my right hand. The doctor said it might be better not to do surgery due to the severity of the break and we would try splinting 1st. It has been eight weeks now and I am really pressed for time to go to therapy so I haven’t been. The doctor said I could do this myself. I have been doing epsom salt soaks in warm water, stretching the tendons by gently pressing my fingers on a hard surface to stretch them out and trying to make a full fist although I can’t make a full fist. I do all these things daily. Am I doing the right things? What exactly should I be doing as far as exercises for restoration of finger/grip function? The knuckle on the middle finger next to the broken one has swelling on the right side of the knuckle that I am worried about. Could this be arthritis? Sprain? Should I also be using ice for swelling?

Let me say this…people’s hand are their livelyhood. MAKE THE TIME to go see a CERTIFIED HAND THERAPIST. Just in case you didn’t hear me the first time…. make sure the PT or OT you are seeing is a certified hand therapist. Sounds like you need some joint mobilization, of which you cannot do to yourself… you really need an expert to look at your finger. Make the time for your health.
    Good luck, Mya

Hey i had nearly the same problem although mine did require two pins to be inserted to correct the angle. The exercises i got from my physio were similar to these involved me holding the bottom of the finger and trying to bend. Unfortunately the finger will probably be larger than the others, although pretty much full mobility should return. It took me months and it’s not perfect. But my advice see a physio i only went three times but it’ll be worth it.
