Shattered Heel

(2 discussions)

I was in a car accident in October of 2014 and I shattered my heel and broke my femur. I now have a metal rod in my leg and 7 or so screws in my heel. Well my heel did not heal as well as the doctor would have liked, the bone had actually shifted to the right a little, so I had to undergo surgery again. I am now off my foot for another 6 weeks. My pain level really isn’t that bad, and even when I started to walk last time around my heel never hurt, it was really just my ankle. I guess because I hadn’t used my muscles in so long is why it hurt. I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through almost the same thing, and if they were able to get full motion back? My doctor said the side to side might be difficult to get back completely. I am 22 years old and I am now worried that I will limping for the rest of my life.

Ashley I was in a car accident on August 16, 2014 and am now undergoing my 3rd surgery on my foot. I shattered my calcaneous/heel and tore the ligaments on my knee. My leg bone didn’t break but it did cut through my foot. Everyone’s injury is a little different. Sounds like you are doing better than I am if that is any consolation. I have a lot of pain and they are going to fuse my talar to my calcaneous. I limp and only can handle walking for about 30 min. at a time. I was told my recovery will take 18-24 months. Only then will we know if I have a permanent limp. Are they telling you something similar–18 to 24 months?

Hi Ashley,I’m a 23 years old, and I shattered my heel a year ago. I have a plate and 10 screws in it. The doctor would like to keep the plate in forever, but I am having issues with it. I have very bad bone pain after being on my feet for about an hour. The ankle stiffness has started to get better for me though. I was off of my feet for about 3 months and walking was horrible at first. I get better flexion as time goes on, but in the morning my foot is still very stiff. I like to think that it will get better. I do alot of excercising like bending on steps and with a towel to try to regain ankle movement.
