Shin Splints I think.

(2 discussions)

Ive had a severe pain in my shins (about a 2 square inch area where I feel the pain on the bone on each shin, exact same spot). I’m guessing shin splints. Any one have any advice such as wrapping or using braces when running and if that even helps? Also any suggestions such as anti inflammatory pills, MSM, glucosamine that may help?

Mike: I hav ebeen in the Cdn Military for awhile and thanks to doing 6-20 Km runs in combat boots -I am now the proud owner of shin splints … Thankfully they haven’t gone to the point of stress fractures. The best exercises that help me is: lay a hand towel on the floor, start curling it under your toes till you reach the far side of the towel, repeat, Keep doing this till you reach 15 times… the second is to knee down on the floor then slowly sit on your heels – start with 30 seconds then work your way up with time until you reach about 5 minutes. At first 30 seconds will seem like an eternity… Do this several times a day whenever you have a free minute…(it hurts when you first start doing it but it feels wonderful after)I was told by the military doctors that unfortunately, once you have shin splints – they’ll always bug you but if you keep stretching – the pain becomes tolerable…some people say arch supports help but I didn’t notice a big difference…now I can run and hardly notice them – the only time they bug me is when I don’t stretch properly… Good Luck
