Was it a seperation of the AC joint or a dislocated shoulder? That could make a difference in regards to rehab. Also, when did you do it?

Did you have PT for this condition? Are you reaching overhead yet? When you do, is the joint grinding or popping?

My Doctor didn’t refer me to a P.T…. I can almost get my arm overhead but not without pain. I am a drummer by profession and have had to work 16 out of the last 18 nights which I’m sure hasn’t helped…sore after work. Havent noticed any grinding. I have a hot tub at home…been working on range of motion while its loose in hot water..seems to help. On the road right now without tub..be home next week…just didn’t want to do anything that will impede any healing plus strenthen it for golf… Thanks so much.

The AC joint is technically the acromioclavicular joint…it’s where the clavicle and the acromian (an extenions of the scapula or shoulder blade) meet. As you raise your arm overhead that joint rotates some. If you still have pain overhead try to limit your overhead activities. Your trying to let the joint heal and form some scar tissue to provide stability. With all that said…. Do a lookup on the net for golf exercises and try them. If they hurt or put strain on the area of injury stop doing them. DO NOT attempt resistive exercises at first. Do them with no weight for 10-20 reps. The next day see how you feel…. When you can get up to 30-40 add a pound and drop the reps to 10 then work back up to 30-40 and so on. After drumming and your sore put some ice on it for 15-20 minutes. I’m sure you’re aggrivating it and there probably is some slight swelling there. Actually you can use ice 15-20 minutes every hour. Do not keep on for more than 20 minutes as you can get an ice burn…or frostbite. Hope this helps and good luck….a drummer on the road eh? Anyone we might know?

Well…this is nice. Am I sending this to a professional? I hope so…maybe you can ease my mind. I have been a server for 9 years and about a month ago my right shoulder began to hurt badly.Unreal pain when I moved it certain ways(putting on a shirt!) I went to chiropractor…never been before…thinking it was “out of whack”. He took x-rays; and my collar bone was sticking up… It did not look like a “normal” shoulder. He popped it back in place, and for 2 days I thought I was dying! The pain was unreal; could not move my arm. He was not very knowledgable in telling me what was going on. He said it was “separated”. I went to ER at hospital and they gave me a sling, 800 mg ibuprofen and darvocet; and advised me to see ortho surgeon. My shoulder feels extremely better since the swelling went away…it’s just aggetated in certain positions. I have been educating myself on the AC joint via internet and wondering if I should pay $500(can’t afford) to see surgeon. Is this a injury I can self medicate with rest, and pampering of my shoulder? I can tell my shoulder is in good position. When they x-rayed me at ER my shoulder was in proper position; which chiropractor fixed. What do you think??
