shoulder dislocation

(2 discussions)

I dislocated my shoulder last night(for the second time)attempting to hit a volleyball hard into the ground (I was mad because I missed it the first time). I put it back in by laying face down on a table with my left arm hanging down to the ground while massaging my shoulder blade. I learned this at the hospital when I dislocated my shoulder the first time. According to my x-rays I’ve suffered no bone damage. I do a lot of weightlifting. I had hoped that that would help stop this from happening again. Do you have any ideas why it came out so easlily again after 8 months of healing? It wasn’t the first time I’ve hit the volleyball left-handed. Do you have any specific excersizes I should be doing to help stregthen my shoulder and rotator cuff? Thanks for your help.

Hi Ross-How old are you? If you are younger the chances of a second dislocation and other following are greatly increased once you have had one. The ligaments which are responsible for holding the shoulder in place strech after a disclocation. Ligments do NOT go back to there old form after they have been stretched. This is why after 8 months it happened again. I assumed that you went to rehab…there they should have strengthened the rotator cuff tendons to help increase the dynamic stability of the shoulder. This always doesn’t help and if you keep dislocating, many times surgery is needed. I have had this surgery. Email me if you have more questions.-Liz

Hi, For anyone who is interested… I’m starting a support group for anyone who has had a shoulder problem such as dislocations, torn rotator, fractures and surgery. I myself have went through years of shoulder dislocation and now at 24 I had an open surgery done on 3/15. I’m going through a lot of pain and could use some support and info myself right now. If anyone is interested in joining the group go to yahoo groups and type in: Shoulder_TLC (don’t forget the underscore)
