shoulder hypermobility

(2 discussions)

HiI had shoulder surgery in early Jan 05. I was told that I have hypermobility causing impingment and there is no surgery to fix it at this time. I have completed pysio and was feeling a little better but as I return to activities I am really starting to hurt and I am still unable to raise my arm very high or sleep on it or lower it on the bed when sleeping on the opposite side (i put a pillow there to rest on.) Will the pain ever go away or will I need on going pysio as the surgeon suggested?

I had exactly the same thing. I think you’ll find though that normally there is surgery available, but it is relitivly costly, and the recovery period is rather long. I personally have just come out of surgery for hypermobile shoulders, they operated on my left (both are/were quite bad). After 6 weeks in a sling, it can be up to 8 months of restricted movement. However, the pain is gone. Physio therapy did not work for me (i tried it for several months when it was really bad, and had already been doing it for over a year), but that could have been because of the sport. Ask the physio’s judgement on wether you need the surgery, or do they think they can help you. Physio can help, but surgery is available, it al depends on what you want to achieve.
