Shoulder Impingement

(2 discussions)

I’m 50 years old and have a pain in my shoulder. It is like a nerve is being pinched. I have trouble raising my arm above my head and sometimes the pain wakes me up at night. I’ve stopped doing shoulder exercises, but the pain seems to be getting worse and it almost seems like the shoulder is starting to lock up on me. I did have bursitis in that same shoulder awhile back. What should I do for exercises and stretching and should I use ice or heat for it and for how long? Should I stop weight training completely? Thanks you so much for your time.

Matt,First off, stop doing any shoulder exercises, as they will make your tendonitis/bursitis worse at the present time. Go with ice treatments: four times a day (20 minutes each time). I would not use any heat fight now. You might also want to take some over-the-counter anti-inflammatory meds, such as Advil, four times a day. This would be good for decreasing the pain and inflammation. We tend to recommend 600mg of Ibupfofen 3-4 times a day. You should ask your family doctor first, as he might prefer to put you on a stronger Rx medication. Give the ice, rest, and meds 10 days to work: if they are going to work, you should see an improvement within that time period. If not, then you need to see an Orthopedist. Physical Therapy, and/or even Cortosone injections can be very beneficial. Of course, I prefer patients to try PT first, before giving steroid injections. Please try the above, and then let us know how you make out. Good luck!
